A Whale of a Time

Whale watching in Hermanus

We were told that if we gave our best to our maths classes after school we could go out on an outing. So it happened: we got a chance to see whales and penguins!

We firstly drove around the sea and had to look out for ocean animals. We spotted no animals but we did stop to see some important facts about people looking out for us while we swim.

After that we made it to the penguins and we learned some facts and funny things about penguins like that some of them are called Jackass Penguins because they make a noise similar to a jackass (donkey) after fishing to greet each other. We also learned about the waaygat harbours that used to catch whales for the fat of whales. There was even oil for the ships that would drag the whales to the harbour.

We then went to a place to look out for whales. We spotted 4 dolphins swimming in a beautiful path. Something good on my side is that I was the first to spot the back of a whale while it was blowing water and it happened after a long time of waiting and believing that I would see a whale.

We even got a time to eat good fish and we had some nice conversation with the Discovery team. It was nice to do that because I don’t go out a lot at this age but most of all I did enjoy it. Thanks Discovery!
